Pantry Staple: Tortillas

A pack of tortillas is a staple for the ominivore/herbivore pantry, provided that they aren’t made with lard. Tortillas are versatile wrapper for many foods, and allow the both of you to enjoy the same meal, only a little different.

5 easy meals you can make with tortillas.

  • Tacos: Use ground beef, fake ground beef or grilled fish, chicken or tofu for the filling. Top with lettuce, tomato, salsa and real/fake cheese.
  • Quesadillas: cheese for the omnivore, vegan cheese for the herbivore. While I don’t like to endorse particular brands, Vegan Gourmet is the best vegan cheese I have tried (out of many) for this purpose- it melts very well. Add vegetables and meats to your taste.
  • Burritos: Rice, beans, cheese, some sort of other protein (meat or tofu), salsa, and grilled veggies.
  • Breakfast burritos: wrap scrambled eggs or tofu with some form of cheese (dairy or soy) in a tortilla with salsa; add sausage or veggies of your choice (bell pepper and zucchini are good).
  • Wraps: Whatever you would put in a sandwich can be made into a wrap. I like hummus, tomato and sprouts; David likes tuna.

Get creative. One of the most filling snacks I’ve found is wrapping a vegan hot dog in a corn tortilla and dipping it in salsa.
